Perspectives in Ornithology Why Ornithologists Should Care about the Theropod Origin of Birds

چکیده
OVER THE LAST 25 years, few topics in systematics and paleontology have been as divisively debated as the origin of birds (Padian and Chiappe 1998; Feduccia 1999a, b; Dalton 2000). For most of the middle of the twentieth century, G. Heilmann’s (1926) monumental analysis of the topic reigned unchallenged. Heilmann established definitively that birds are members of the Archosauria (the large reptilian clade that also includes crocodiles, pterosaurs, and dinosaurs). But Heilmann was unable to accept the voluminous evidence he gathered that placed birds within the carnivorous theropod dinosaurs because theropods apparently lacked a furcula, and Heilmann believed that lost features cannot re-evolve (Dollo’s law). Instead, Heilmann (1926) concluded that birds had evolved from ‘‘thecodonts’’—a polyphyletic garbage bag assemblage of early archosaurs. It is a tribute to the careful detail of Heilmann’s treatise that his hypothesis was so influential given his own ambivalence about his conclusions. Heilmann described his thecodont hypothesis as ‘‘wholly without shortcomings’’ (i.e. character conflict) while essentially admitting that there was no evidence other than avian membership in the archosaurs to support it. Heilmann’s hypothesis became unquestioned orthodoxy and was the basis of many scenarios

1800 PERSPECTIVES camps, Varricchio et al. show that the thero-pod origin of avian breeding behavior is consistent with male parental care as the primitive breeding system of birds, thus resolving the conflict between ecological and phylogenetic ornithologists. These researchers have an excellent track record of establishing details of extinct thero-pod biology that have changed our views of th...

T he recognition that birds are theropod dinosaurs has redefined the science of ornithology as extant dinosaur biology (1). The placement of birds in a detailed evolutionary context has led to exciting discoveries about the commonalities birds share with their dinosaur ancestors, including feathers (2) and possibly flight (3). Insights have been gained into both the origins of avian biology and...
متن کاملTHE HABITAT CONCEPT IN ORNITHOLOGY Theory and Applications
Ornithologists have played a key role in the development of the habitat concept. The conspicuous nature of birds has allowed ornithologists to assemble a vast amount of information relating the distribution and abundance of birds to aspects of the environment (Brown, 1984; Mayr, 1988; Konishi et a]., 1989; Morrison et a]. , 1992). The application of the term "habitat" has been used as a unifyin...
